Henderson woman, 18, found dead in Utah wilderness

Updated Monday, Aug. 31, 2009 | 12:11 p.m.

Hikers who reported a suspicious odor on a trail in Green Canyon, Utah, led rescuers to the body of 18-year-old Andrea Celina Roye of Henderson about 5 p.m. Sunday, the Cache County Sheriff's Office said.

The teenager's body was found in a heavily wooded area. Evidence at the scene suggested that Roye's death was a suicide, said Sheriff's Lt. Matt Bilodeau. It will take the Utah state medical examiner six to eight weeks to determine how she died, he said.

Roye's body was found on the Beirdneau trail, about two miles from the mouth of Green Canyon near Logan, Utah.

Roye's mother, Janice Roye, told The Herald Journal News that she was leaving Henderson to go to Utah today.

Roye, of Henderson, was reported missing Aug. 6 after hiking alone into Green Canyon with her 4-month-old dog. Searchers used infrared technology, search dogs and a helicopter to search the area for 10 days before formally ending the search on Aug. 17.

Bilodeau said searchers had returned to the area several times since then to comb areas they felt they had missed.

Bilodeau said that when searchers arrived in the area on Sunday, they saw Roye's dog run from the area. Rescuers will try to rescue the dog, he said.
