Las Vegas area sees eighth death from swine flu

The Southern Nevada Health District has confirmed an eighth Las Vegas area death from the novel H1N1 influenza, also known as swine flu.

The patient was a 53-year-old man who died in May, health officials said. There is no information available on any underlying medical conditions the man might have had, the health district said.

The number of H1N1-related deaths reflects residents of Clark County. In June the health district reported the death of a patient from upstate New York, who died in a Las Vegas hospital.

To date, a total of 294 cumulative cases of the H1N1 flu have been reported in Southern Nevada since the novel virus was discovered in April, according to the health district's latest figures as of Friday.
