Fire guts vacant duplex near downtown

Fire

Heavy smoke and flames gutted a vacant duplex in an area north of downtown Las Vegas early this morning.

Las Vegas Fire Department crews arrived at the Cadillac Arms complex after a call at 12:59 a.m., said Tim Szymanski, spokesman for the fire department. The duplex is at 121 Paul Ave., near D Street and Owens Avenue.

The one-story building was gutted on the inside and damage is estimated at $25,000, Szymanski said.

The cause of the fire was not determined. The duplex was empty, and some windows were boarded up while others were broken and open, Szymanski said.

It appeared to fire investigators that some type of renovation was under way at the time of the fire, Szymanski said.

The duplex was built in 1954, according to city of Las Vegas records.
