Smoke from California wildfire reaches Las Vegas
Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009 | 8:24 p.m.
A three-day-old wildfire burning in Southern California's Los Padres National Forest sent smoke today into the Las Vegas Valley.
The National Weather Service said the smoke should remain high in the atmosphere, but it turned Tuesday's sunset into a red spectacle.
The 20,622-acre wildfire started Sunday, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. The cause is not known.
The fire grew more than 5,000 acres from Monday through Tuesday, the center said. The flames still have not been contained and 14 occupied ranches have been given evacuation warnings, meaning residents must be prepared to leave immediately.
The fire is located 21 miles east of Santa Maria in Santa Barbara County.
