Motorcycle cop injured in crash with car

Car driver arrested after showing signs of being impaired

Officer struck by car

A Metro Police officer was injured this morning in an accident with a possibly impaired driver on Warm Springs Road in the southwest valley, police said.

The 39-year-old officer was riding his motorcycle east on Warm Springs near Jones Boulevard about 6:30 a.m.

A 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Amber Byrd, 32, of Las Vegas, turned left to go south on Folded Mountains Way, into the officer’s path, according to an accident report released by Metro.

The motorcycle hit the PT Cruiser, throwing the officer off the vehicle. The officer was sent about 100 feet across the asphalt, Metro spokesman Ramon Denby said.

Both drivers were taken to UMC Trauma for treatment of moderate injuries.

The driver of the Chrysler showed signs of being impaired and was arrested and taken to the Clark County Detention Center, Denby said

Denby said the officer did not have lights or sirens on at the time of the crash, but did have the right-of-way.

Traffic on Warm Springs was restricted while police conducted an investigation, but the road was clear at 11 a.m.

This is the second accident involving a Metro officer on a motorcycle this week. Another officer was injured Wednesday when a pickup truck turned left into the officer’s path.
