Metro Police call gang initiation e-mail a hoax
Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008 | 3:45 p.m.
A hoax e-mail circulating on the Internet has made it to Las Vegas computers, Metro Police said today.
The message, which has popped up on computer screens nationwide over several days, warns readers of an impending gang initiation that will involve the shooting of a woman in the head at a gas station, police said.
While this e-mail has been evaluated by Metro Police and deemed part of the nationwide hoax, police are reminding residents to remain vigilant while in public places and to be aware of their surroundings. Police released the following tips:
• Don't display large amounts of cash in public.
• Don't wear flashy jewelry while running errands.
• Lock car doors while inside vehicles, and when walking to a vehicle, have keys ready to unlock the door.
• Whenever possible, walk in well-lit areas and in groups at night.
• If confronted by a potential attacker, be cooperative and observant.
More tips are available at the Metro Police Web site at www.lvmpd.com.
