Veterans cemetery to get new maintenance facility

The Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery will construct a new maintenance facility and three-acre service yard, thanks to a $2.3 million Department of Veteran Affairs grant.

The project will begin before the year's end and take a little less than a year to complete, said Tim Tetz, executive director of the Nevada Office of Veterans Services.

Construction won't disrupt funerals, he said.

Since the state cemetery opened in 1990, 23,000 veterans and family members have been buried there. It is the only veterans cemetery in Southern Nevada.

As the cemetery has grown from 10 acres to more than 43, it needs a larger maintenance building and yard for more equipment and workers, Tetz said. The new facilities will replace the original ones in the same place, just east of the columbarium.
