General Election Results

2nd District congressional race

Rep. Dean Heller, R-Carson City, is pulling away from Democrat Jill Derby, a former member of the Nevada Board of Regents. With an unknown percentage of precincts reporting, the incumbent leads 51.2 percent to 42 percent. Statewide, a fourth of the precincts have reported.

Congressional incumbents have been vulnerable this election cycle, especially in the wake of the economic collapse. That collapse may have helped to sweep Barack Obama to the presidency and ousted at least five incumbent Republican senators.

Not surprisingly, Derby’s campaign has cited the struggles of the Republican Party as evidence that she could topple Heller. State Democrats have made significant gains in registration.

This is the second duel between Heller and Derby. Heller won two years ago. Derby’s resume includes 18 years on the Board of Regents, while Heller’s boasts 12 years as the secretary of state.
