Funds to help airport make runway safer

The Boulder City Airport expects to receive $1.2 million for runway safety improvements by July, officials said.

Most of that money will pay for grading the dirt drainage areas surrounding the runways so the airport complies with Federal Aviation Administration code, Kerry Ahearn, airport manager, said.

The FAA grant will come in March, Ahearn said, but not be available to use until July, when work on the improvements will begin.

On Dec. 4, Ahearn, Airport Director Brok Armantrout and the city's airport consultant, Kevin Flynn, met at the FAA district office near San Francisco to present the 2009 Airport Capital Improvement Plan. Safety improvements for the next three years are expected to cost $3.5 million.

Ahearn said the main runway needs to be rehabilitated because of cracks, and the perimeter fencing needs to be completed to ward off animals and prevent trespassing.

The airport is guaranteed $150,000 in federal funds every year and competes with other airports in the Western Pacific Region for more money. Boulder City Airport is required to match 5 percent of the annual grant and will spend about $60,000 this year on the grading, Ahearn said.
