BC Council sets stage for spring elections

The municipal elections to be held next spring are likely to put two new members on the City Council.

Councilman Mike Pacini is ineligible to run again because of term limits and Councilwoman Andrea Anderson said Dec. 11 she is "99 percent sure" she won't run either. Pacini has served for 12 years, and Anderson for eight.

The primary election is scheduled for April 7, with the general June 2.

The City Council during its Dec. 9 meeting set the dates, established an increased candidacy filing cost and approved ballot questions.

Candidates must file for election from Jan. 27 to 29 and Feb. 2 to 5, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., in the City Clerk's office.

The charge was raised to $75, up from $50 since 2003. Councilman Travis Chandler and Councilwoman Linda Strickland opposed the increase.

The council formally approved four questions to appear on the ballot and will consider at least two more questions.

Voters will again consider two amendments to the City Charter they approved in November — whether to make the charter gender neutral and whether to bring it into compliance with state law regarding public meetings to discipline public officials.

Also, voters will choose whether to make the charter comply with state law that governs placing advisory questions on general election and general city election ballots.

Voters will also determine whether geothermal energy development is appropriate for the Eldorado Valley Transfer Area, outside the multi-species conservation easement.

The council plans to consider a question amending the charter to reflect the annexation of the Western Area Power Administration area and a question clarifying how the City Council is to interact with city staff.
