BC trimming budget at golf courses

To save money, the city is doing less maintenance at both of its golf courses during periods when they are drawing fewer golfers and making less money.

The cuts are expected to save $100,000 at Boulder Creek Golf Club from now until July, and about $290,000 at Boulder City Municipal Golf Course from last month until July, City Manager Vicki Mayes said.

She said in January, the city will decide whether to further cut costs.

"We'll watch it quite closely," she said.

In October, Boulder Creek drew $152,997 less than it did in October 2007, and the municipal course took in $55,530 less, she said.

Mayes said the maintenance change shouldn't be visible at Boulder Creek, where part-time landscaping employee hours have been reduced.

Andy Schaper, who runs the Pro Shop at the course, said he'd also reduce cart attendant hours, meaning some guests will probably have to carry their own golf bags from their cars to the course.

At the municipal course, a considerable reduction in part-time employee hours in landscaping and at the cart barn might be more apparent to golfers and visitors, Mayes said.

She said an electrical panel replacement there was also put on hold to shave costs.
