THE ELEVATOR

Who's headed toward the penthouse on the local sports scene - and who's getting the shaft.

GOING UP

Formula One

Kimi Raikkonen, "The Iceman" from Finland, won the tightest race for a season title in 21 years by taking the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday in Sao Paolo. With 110 points, he finished a point ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.

Great hands

Alicia Lugo, a sophomore goalkeeper on the UNLV women's soccer team, has tied the program's single-season mark with eight shutouts. She's a big reason why the Rebels (8-3-5 overall) top the Mountain West Conference at 3-0-1. They play host to Air Force Friday night at UNLV.

Hot shot

Who has looked the best in barely more than a week of UNLV basketball practice? Swingman Curtis Terry, a former walk-on, has displayed the confidence, in decision-making and shooting, that coach Lon Kruger expects from a senior. He might start at the point.

GOING DOWN

Bookmakers

That UNLV football could be favored against anyone in the country is hilarious, even a foe that had lost 13 in a row. The line-setters learned a lesson last week by making the Rebels a slim favorite against Colorado State. The Rams won, 48-23. UNLV is 6-25 under coach Mike Sanford.

Replay

Aussie replay official Stuart Dickinson ruined English momentum Saturday at the rugby World Cup finale in Paris by ruling that Mark Cueto's knee grazed the touchline on what looked like a valid corner try. With a conversion kick, England would have led South Africa, 10-9. Instead, England cut its deficit to 9-6 with a penalty kick. The Springboks won, 15-6.

Mr. November

Who will earn that moniker as Major League Baseball drags out its playoffs? The World Series, starting today between Colorado and Boston, will stretch into next month if there's a Game 7 or poor weather. We'll go with Manny "So What If We Lose?" Ramirez of the Sox.
