SACRAMENTO -- Coachella Valley and Tulare County won't be getting additional funds anytime soon to hire police officers, buy fire trucks and improve traffic flow and safety around Indian casinos.
But it's still possible the money could be approved next year in time for it to be distributed to local cities and the county for use in the 2006-07 fiscal year, which begins on July 1, 2006.
Senate Bill 288, which would have given Riverside County another $8.5 million and Tulare County an additional $410,000 from nearby tribes, stalled in the Legislature late Thursday.
The measure was being debated in the Assembly shortly before 10 p.m. when the Senate abruptly shut down for the year, closing the final door that the bill had to pass through on the way to the governor's office.
