Combine gives players chance to get noticed

Local prep football players are set to show off their skills Saturday as the Southern Nevada Football Coaches' Association holds its annual combine at Sam Boyd Stadium.

For the first time, the SNFCA's combine will incorporate the national standardized athletic test. That will allow college coaches to review athletes' performance online based on a national grading scale.

"Everyone has access to the Web site. Coaches from the midwest, the east can pull up the results, a shot, height and weight," said Palo Verde coach Darwin Rost, who is also the president of the SNFCA.

Rost expects around 35 college coaches to attend the combine in person. Registration for athletes begins at 7:30 a.m.

Rebels set home run record

In Game 4 of the Mountain West Conference tournament in San Diego, UNLV (42-16) used two home runs and dominant pitching to beat San Diego State, 4-1 and move into Game 8 at 7 p.m. tonight.

The Rebels broke open a 1-1 tie with a two-run home run in the third inning and a solo shot in the fifth to set the school's single-season record at 45.

Jacque Kerrigan won her 27th game of the season.

Rain forces doubleheader

In Provo, Utah, the showdown between the top two teams in the Mountain West Conference was delayed a day as rain cancelled Thursday night's game between UNLV (25-24, 19-5 MWC) and BYU (33-15-1, 17-7).

The game will be made up today as part of a doubleheader at 2 p.m.

He currently has a 3.39 GPA and is majoring in sociology. On the field Parraz is hitting .356 (67-188) with seven home runs and 56 RBIs.

Javelin hurts Spence in heptathlon

In Fort Collins, Colo., Christine Spence led the heptathlon after five events at the MWC Outdoor Championships but the senior struggled in the javelin and finished fifth in the competition with 4,956 points.

Spence led eventual winner Katie Lloyd of Colorado State by 155 points heading into the javelin, but scored only 219 points in the event with a toss of 53 feet, 2 inches, while Lloyd tallied 611 points in the event. She finished 44 points shy of reaching the NCAA Regional provisional qualifying mark of 5,000 points.

Moore honored at state capitol

Senior Ryan Moore, along with head coach Dwaine Knight, spent Thursday at the Nevada State Capitol where Moore was honored for his accomplishments by Governor Kenny Guinn, state Senators Randolph Townsend and Bob Coffin and the Legislative Assembly led by Assemblyman Mo Dennis in three separate ceremonies proclaiming May 12, 2005, as a day in honor of Ryan D. Moore.

Moore is a three-time All-American, two-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and the all-time winningest Rebel golfer with seven career tournament victories.

Women's regional begins today

The 41st-ranked UNLV women open play in their third NCAA Regional in four years today against No. 31 Texas A&M at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.

With both programs joining the national field this year as at-large selections, the Lady Rebels (14-8) and Aggies (15-12) are set to begin with doubles play at 9 a.m.
