UNLV gets new public affairs assistant

Joe Cockrell, a former print and television journalist, becomes the new assistant director of public affairs at UNLV, replacing Sue DiBella. His salary is $72,000 a year.

DiBella is now working in the university's office of Research and Graduate Studies publishing a new magazine and working on internal communications, said Hilarie Grey, public affairs director and special assistant to the president.

Cockrell will be helping Grey and Gian Galassi, senior public affairs specialist, with media and external relations, Grey said. He will also be running the university's speakers bureau and will help produce television programming for UNLV on the Cox Communications education channels (70 and 71).

Cockrell was associate director of public relations and marketing at the University of Phoenix's corporate headquarters in Phoenix and before that he served as the assistant director of communications at Marquette University in Milwaukee.
