Group seeks to restore gaming-impact funding

SACRAMENTO -- The Coachella Valley legislative delegation will push new legislation to restore $20 million for cities and counties to deal with impact of tribal casinos, Sen. Jim Battin, R-La Quinta, said Thursday.

The money was cut out of the budget by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, leaving $30 million in the special account that is funded by tribes.

There is about $8.5 million at stake for Riverside County and $410,000 for Tulare County.

The money typically goes for such uses as public safety and traffic control.

The governor said he was reducing the money to what it was last year because counties hadn't filed required reports on how they were spending the money.

But local officials later documented that most counties had filed the reports.

"There seems to be a complete misunderstanding and I aim to resolve it," Battin said in a press release.
