Letter: Former first lady’s wisdom will be missed

I was saddened to learn of the recent death of Nevada's former first lady, Carolyn O'Callaghan. I met her when I was working on my first campaign in 1985. I was walking streets and placing signs for candidate Lorna Kesterson for Henderson's mayor. Carolyn was there to advise, assist and help with all the things that must go on while in a campaign and to help plan what do to on election night, especially if one wins.

I learned a lot from her experiences and was glad our paths crossed. In the old days, it was said that there was always a great woman behind a successful man. Not only was this true with Carolyn and Mike (Mike O'Callaghan, two-term governor in the 1970s, who died March 5), but it was probably more like a successful woman behind, alongside and sometimes leading the way for a successful man.

It is likewise often said that each of us leaves a little of ourselves behind; Carolyn left a little of her style, class and knowledge with a young college student all those years ago. I won't forget, nor will many Nevadans.
