Vegas Play of the Day: Wyoming at SMU

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

Wyoming plus-5.5 at SMU: $770 to win $700

Two reasons not to buy into Wyoming’s 7-0 start: The Cowboys’ first road game isn’t until today at SMU, and three of the victories weren’t on the betting board because it was against either a non-Division I team or a squad that would be better off in a lower division.

That’s why a team with a perfect record can get nearly six points against a good but not great SMU team whose best incoming recruit (Emmanuel Mudiay) is injured in China. And I will take those points with pleasure.

I’ve watched what I can of Wyoming this year because, pace be damned, they’re a joy to see. Coach Larry Shyatt is great, and this year’s roster, including a healthy Larry Nance, looks like the primary contender alongside San Diego State for this year’s league title.

Maybe I’ve been fooled by the weak schedule, but I feel like I’ve seen enough out of Wyoming to take the points without much second thought.

Standings: Bern (58-48-1, $12,686), Keefer (51-58-1, $7,701), Brewer (49-56-3, $4,055)
