Randy Ruiz and Buck Coats hit home runs Tuesday to help the Las Vegas 51s build a three-run lead after seven innings at the Nashville Sounds.
But the Las Vegas bullpen couldn’t hold the lead, surrendering a pair of runs in the eighth and ninth innings of a 5-4 defeat in the final game of an eight-game road trip.
The 51s went 4-4 on the trip — four games at Memphis and Nashville — and return home to Cashman Field for an eight-game home stand starting Thursday. The 51s play Oklahoma City at 7:05 p.m.
Ruiz stared the scoring in the third inning with a two-run home run and Coats hit a two-run shot in the seventh inning to give Las Vegas a 4-1 lead.
Joe Koshansky and Jason Bourgeois had run-scoring singles for Nashville in the eighth to cut the Las Vegas lead to 4-3. Tony Gwynn Jr. singled and scored on an error in the ninth for Nashville and Brendan Katin’s RBI single three batters later won the game.
Las Vegas drops to 15-24 in the Pacific Coast League’s Pacific South Division, trailing first place Sacramento by seven games.
