Two-run first inning gives 51s win at Memphis

Buck Coats had two hits and two runs Thursday night and starter Dirk Hayhurst pitched into the seventh inning of a 3-1 victory against the host Memphis Redbirds.

Coats doubled to open the game and scored on a Memphis throwing error to highlight a two-run first inning. Howie Clark scored the 51s second run when J. P. Arencibia hit into a double play.

That would be all Hayhurst would need. He gave up one run — a Mark Shorey solo home run — on six hits with six strikeouts in 6 and 1/3 innings.

Las Vegas (13-21) added an insurance run in the eighth inning when Coats doubled and scored on a single from Clark.

The teams conclude their four-game series at 5:05 p.m. Friday.
