Eight-run inning lifts 51s past Sacramento

The Las Vegas 51s trailed 9-0 Friday after three innings against the visiting Sacramento River Cats, but sent 13 batters to the plate in the seventh inning to score eight runs in a 14-10 victory.

Las Vegas first baseman Brett Harper led the charge with a pair of home runs – the third consecutive game he has hit a home run.

Sacramento scored three runs in the second inning and six in the third to take a commanding 9-0 lead. But in the Pacific Coast League, a league known for its high-scoring affairs, no lead is safe.

Las Vegas, which has won three of its last four games, started the comeback in its half of the third with three runs. Aaron Mathews singled and scored to start the rally.

Harper’s first home run of the night trimmed the deficit to 6-4 in the fourth inning.

Sacramento scored once in its half of the seventh, but Las Vegas responded with its eight-run inning to take a commanding 12-7 lead and send the 8,844 fans at Cashman Field home happy.

Howie Clark and Randy Ruiz had back-to-back run-scoring singles to ignite the rally and Angel Sanchez had a two-run double.

The teams play the second game of their four-game series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Cashman Field.
