51s can’t hold lead at Fresno

The Las Vegas 51s were nine outs away from returning to Southern Nevada on a three-game winning streak.

Instead, they squandered a four-run lead in the final three innings at the Fresno Grizzlies in losing the final game of a four-game series, 6-5.

Las Vegas (8-19) scored four runs in the fifth inning and once in the seventh to take a 5-1 lead. But Fresno plated one run in its half of the seventh and three runs in the eighth to even the score at 5.

The Grizzlies’ Ryan Rohlinger singled home Adam Witter with the game winner in the ninth.

Howie Clark and Brett Harper hit home runs for Las Vegas in the fifth inning as the 51s built a 4-1 lead. It was Harper’s second home run in as many days and his sixth home run of the season.

Harper, Clark and centerfielder Buck Coats each had two hits for Las Vegas, while Angel Sanchez scored two runs.

Las Vegas opens a four-game series with the Sacramento River Cats at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Cashman Field.
