51s top Fresno for second consecutive day

Randy Ruiz hit his seventh home run of the season Wednesday night to lead the Las Vegas 51s to a 9-5 victory against the host Fresno Grizzlies.

The win gives Las Vegas (8-18) back-to-back wins for the first time this season, a stretch that includes a five-game and a pair of four-game losing streaks.

Buck Coats opened the game with a single and scored on a two-run home run from Ruiz to give Las Vegas a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The 51s plated two more runs in the second inning on a run-scoring single from Angel Sanchez and a sacrifice fly RBI from Aaron Mathews.

Las Vegas added three more runs in the third inning, including a two-run home run from J.P. Arencibia, to build a 7-0 advantage.

Unlike Tuesday night, when the 51s squandered an early 6-0 lead only to win in extra innings, the fast start was too much for Fresno to overcome -- even with Las Vegas struggling defensively.

Las Vegas, which committed four errors Tuesday, had three more errors Wednesday that led to three unearned runs.

Brian Burres gave up one earned run in seven innings and struck out seven for the win. Brett Harper, who led Las Vegas with three hits and two runs scored, clubbed a solo home run in fourth inning for his fifth home run of the season.

The teams conclude their four-game series at 7:05 p.m. Thursday. Las Vegas returns home at 7:05 p.m. Friday for a four-game series with the Sacramento River Cats.
