51s drop to 0-4 with 8-7 setback at Salt Lake

The 51s second road series of the 2009 season began the same way the first one concluded.

On the heels of a 3-game sweep at Colorado Springs, Mike Basso's club opened its 3-game stand at Salt Lake with an 8-7 loss on Monday night.

24-year-old Brett Cecil, one of the Blue Jays' top pitching prospects, started for Las Vegas and threw 4 solid innings, but was pulled before recording an out in the fifth.

After the 51s took a 2-1 edge in the top of the fifth thanks to a Randy Ruiz solo homer and an RBI single from Angel Sanchez, Salt Lake put up a 4-spot in the bottom half of the inning.

A Russ Adams RBI double keyed a 3-run top of the sixth for Las Vegas, and the 51s snagged a 7-6 edge heading into the bottom of the eighth after Ruiz drove in two more runs with a double.

But a Brandon Wood solo shot for Salt Lake keyed a two-run push for the Bees, and Jailen Peguero closed it out in 1-2-3 fashion.

The second portion of the 4-game series takes place at 5:35 p.m. on Tuesday, with the 51s still looking for their first victory.

The home opener comes on Friday at 7:05 p.m. against Colorado Springs at Cashman Field.
