27 Nevada agencies on beef recall list

Twenty-seven Nevada agencies received beef later involved in the largest recall in U.S. history, according to a report released today.

Clark County Family Services, Clark County Juvenile Justice Services, Clark County School District, Nye County School District, Lincoln County School District and Nellis Air Force Base Child Care were among the agencies in Southern Nevada listed in a 226-page report fro the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Lawmakers pressured the federal government to release the document.

The USDA asked for the voluntary recall of more than 143 million pounds of frozen beef patties last month after the Humane Society of the United States released video taken undercover showing workers at a Hallmark/Westland Meat Co. plant in Chino forcing sick cows to stand using forklifts, electric prods and high-pressure water hoses.

There have been no illnesses from the beef reported so far.

On its Web site, the Food and Drug Administration says that even if a child at a school or facility involved in the recall ate tainted meat, the risk to the child’s health is extremely small. In the case of E. coli 0157:H7 or salmonella, one positive test result was found at the Hallmark/Westland plant and removed, never delivered to any school or facility.

A continuing federal investigation is based on the video showing abusive treatment of animals before slaughter.

The rest of the Nevada agencies are Caliente Youth Center, Carson City School District, China Springs Youth Camp, Churchill County School District, Douglas County School District, Elko County School District, Eureka County School District, Humboldt County School District, Lander County School District, Lyon County School District, Mineral County School District, Nevada Association of Latin Americans, Nevada Youth Training Center, Northern Nevada Child and Adolescent Center, Pershing County School District, Storey County School District, Washoe County Juvenile Services, Washoe County School District, Western Nevada Regional Youth Center and White Pine County School District.
