Bishop Gorman and visiting Green Valley High will have their Oct. 2 high school football game televised nationally on CBS College Sports.

The network, which airs in Southern Nevada on Cox Cable 333, will televise seven high school games this fall.

Gorman coach Tony Sanchez said CBS officials visited the school’s Summerlin campus in mid-July to finalize the deal.

Gorman’s Fertitta Field, a $10 million facility that opened full-time last year, resembles a college stadium. Also, Gorman has four players who have committed to Pac-10 schools and another four with scholarship offers.

“They were looking for different teams to highlight in different areas,” Sanchez said. “They saw our facility and knew we had some kids who are being recruited.”

Green Valley is equally excited to be part of the telecast.

“You don’t get to do that all too often,” Green Valley coach Matt Gerber said. “We’ll try to look our best, but I am more worried about how we play.”

The game will hold extra significance for Gerber’s family.

His father, Dave Gerber, won state championships in 1974 and 1979 as Gorman head coach and is currently an assistant on his son’s staff at Green Valley. Chuck Gerber, Matt Gerber’s uncle, won state titles in 1980, ‘81 and ‘83 as Gorman’s coach.

This will be Dave Gerber’s first time coaching against Gorman since he left. It is also his last year coaching before he retires.

“This is going to be a great game for him to be part of,” Matt Gerber said.

  1. G-A-T-O-R-S. when i went to green valley we laughed at playing gorman. wow, times have changed. do your best fellas.

  2. It's great to see all this football coming to TV...between this and "Thursday Night Lights"...football is finally getting the kind of respect it deserves here in Nevada.

  3. Vegas still has to go a long way, and in order for the state to get more respect the teams will have to play and do well against teams out of state. Over the last few years, Las Vegas High and Gorman have both lost to teams in California and Texas, and just Saturday McQueen just got embarassed by a team from Phoenix.
