Police identify mother shot and killed while waiting for light to change

Metro Police homicide detectives today asked the public for help in solving the shooting death of 39-year-old Blanca Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was shot was shot in the head as she waited for a stoplight about 8 p.m. Friday at East Charleston and Nellis boulevards.

"The victim, Blanca Gonzalez, appears to have been out with her children on a shopping trip, an innocent victim waiting to go home after a shopping trip with her children," Capt. Randy Montandon of Metro Homicide said today at a news conference. Gonzalez' children, a 15-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, were inside the car with her, but were not hurt, Montandon said.

Montandon said police do not believe there had been any previous contact between the victim and suspects before the shooting.

Police are looking for a car described as a light-colored mid-'90s Buick sedan. Witnesses said the car pulled up next to the woman's car, someone pulled out a gun and shot Gonzalez, and sped away. The car contained five suspects including a woman, police said.

At this time, police do not suspect the shooting is gang related and they have no motives or suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.
