Coroner identifies body of woman missing in Las Vegas Wash

The Clark County Coroner's Office has identified a body found in Las Vegas Wash as a 34-year-old woman who was reported missing last year.

The body of Melanie Sutton was found by volunteers on an island in Las Vegas Wash on March 13, Henderson Police spokesman Todd Rasmussen said.

The Coroner's Office identified Sutton but the cause of death has not been determined, a spokeswoman said today. Sutton, formerly Melanie Wickert, is survived by three daughters.

Sutton's boyfriend Joe Lopez reported that she went into the water near Hollywood and Pabco roads on March 2, 2007, police said.

Sutton's parents asked retired police officer Frank Mahoney and volunteers from his organization, the Nevada Center for Missing Loved Ones, to search again for the missing woman on the first anniversary of her disappearance. The center's volunteers spent two weekends out in the Las Vegas Wash and found Sutton's remains on an island less than a quarter mile from where she reportedly went into the water, Mahoney said.

At this time, there is no evidence of foul play, Rasmussen said. The police consider it a missing person's case.

Anyone who has information regarding Sutton's disappearance should contact the Henderson Police Department at 267-4750 or Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.
