Pregnant teen’s fetus dies after crash

A 19-year-old woman standing at a Citizen Area Transit bus stop on West Lake Mead Boulevard, west of Simmons Street, was struck by an eastbound pickup truck Wednesday and North Las Vegas police say her 8-month-old fetus has died.

Police spokesman Mark Hoyt says the accident is still under investigation. The 79-year-old North Las Vegas truck driver who hit the woman and a man may have suffered from a medical condition. If his physical condition prevented him from driving, he could be prosecuted, but if he can drive he may not face charges, Hoyt says.

The woman, the pickup driver and an 18-year-old man standing with the woman were taken to University Medical Center after the crash, which occurred at 2 p.m.

Both teenagers live in Las Vegas, Hoyt says. They were standing at a steel utility pole that had a sign designating the area as a bus stop when the truck hit them, police say.

This is the first fatal accident in North Las Vegas this year, Hoyt says.
