Metro Police arrived in a northwest Las Vegas Valley neighborhood at 6:53 p.m. Monday and found a man with a handgun standing in front of a house.

Uniformed officers said that they responded to a 911 caller who said he wanted to commit "suicide by cop." The caller gave his address in the 5400 block of Painted Mirage Road, police said.

Police identified themselves and ordered 42-year-old Roger Fitzpatrick to put his weapon down and surrender. Fitzpatrick fired two shots into the air and then pointed his weapon at police, officers said.

One officer shot one round from his weapon, missing Fitzpatrick, who immediately surrendered.

After Fitzpatrick was taken to an area hospital for medical and psychiatric evaluation, he was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on three counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, a felony, and two counts of discharging a firearm in a public place, a gross misdemeanor.
