Metro Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in Friday's shooting death of a mother in her car with her two children while she was stopped for a red light.

The 11- and 15-year-olds in the car with 39-year-old Blanca Gonzalez were not injured in the shooting. Gonzalez' 15-year-old son called 911 on a cell phone to report the shooting.

Metro officers arrested Calvin Kirklin Monday after a citizen recognized his car as the one described by police as being involved in the 8:30 p.m. shooting near Nellis and Charleston boulevards.

"To our knowledge, there was no contact between the victim and the suspect prior to the shooting and we're not sure that she even knew they were beside her," said Capt. Randy Montandon of Metro's Homicide Section.

Kirklin faces charges of murder with a deadly weapon and child endangerment. Three other adults and a baby were in the car with Kirklin at the time of the shooting, police said. The other car occupants do not face charges at this time.

Police say they still don't have a motive for the shooting, but do not believe it was gang-related.
