As someone born and raised in Las Vegas, I believe that Dean Schwenk has the medical school heading in the right direction for Nevada. Rather than trying to start fresh with a UNLV medical school, expanding the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) system to include additional training opportunities in southern Nevada can add to the academic medical atmosphere and make Las Vegas a beacon of quality, evidence-driven, safety-focused medical care.

Comments above about folks needing to leave Nevada to obtain quality care are often, and sadly, true. We live in a functionally underserved area with many unrepresented medical subspecialties. In response to this, the Las Vegas branch of UNSOM has been aggressively working to develop new, academic subspecialty departments over recent years with the goal of "home growing" a highly qualified, locally trained, group of physicians to remain in Nevada and elevate the level of care our residents receive.

We all need to get past the Southern vs. Northern competition and continue to push forward with the medical school's original charter: "to provide statewide medial education and patient care."
