Steve Marcus: Best of 2012
Wed, Dec 26, 2012 (10:10 a.m.)
So my selection of photos doesn’t have a theme. It is just a selection of some interesting images from local news or sporting events throughout the year. Of course, the election was a big story, but we also had things like the opening of the Mob Museum and the ShoeZeum, local reaction to the Trayvon Martin shooting in Florida and chimpanzees on the loose. Las Vegas loves a winner, and one of the big winners in 2012 was Greg Merson, 24, of Laurel, Maryland, who dropped out of the University of Maryland and overcame a drug addiction to win the 2012 World Series of Poker main event and take home $8.5 million in prize money. Another big winner was Olivia Culpo, 22, of Rhode Island. Culpo said she won her state in a rented $20 dress with a hole in it. She was crowned Miss USA in Las Vegas this summer, then went on to be crowned Miss Universe 2012. The big winner in boxing was Juan Manuel Marquez who shocked the fans of Manny Pacquiao with a sixth-round knockout victory in their fourth fight.
