The UNLV basketball team isn’t ranked in either major poll Monday for a third consecutive week after splitting a pair of games last week. And, at least according to voters, the Rebels are the fourth best team in their Mountain West Conference.

UNLV freshman Anthony Bennett is in some elite company as a member of two midseason watch lists announced by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association on Thursday.

Despite winning their lone game last week, a 62-50 victory against Wyoming, the Rebels (16-4, 3-2 Mountain West) didn’t do enough to regain a spot in the rankings

The UNLV basketball team has just one loss at the Thomas & Mack Center in coach Dave Rice’s two-year tenure. A significant reason for the success is the home court advantage created by the Rebellion student-cheering section — everything from cheering on their feet the entire game to holding up giant-sized cutouts of players and prominent Las Vegas figures to create an awesome game-day atmosphere.

The Mountain West will divide its football teams into two divisions and play a championship game starting in 2013, the league announced Tuesday. The Mountain West athletic directors voted in favor of the change at their meeting.

The UNLV basketball team has dropped out of the Associated Press rankings after its loss last week at New Mexico. In the poll released Monday, the Rebels were one of four teams ranked last week to fall out of the top-25. UNLV, which was No. 24 last week, received 26 votes from the 65-member media panel — good enough 30th place. No. 25 Marquette received 126 votes.

UNLV’s recruiting success rate when it gets kids on campus is very high. That percentage ticked up again Friday morning when California senior guard Kendall Smith announced his commitment on Twitter after attending Thursday’s Rebels victory.

Smith has enjoyed a nice rise in recruiting circles his senior season, cutting his list recently to UNLV, UCLA and UConn.

The UNLV basketball team has dropped out of the Associated Press rankings after its weekend loss at North Carolina. The Rebels (11-2), who were ranked No. 20 by the AP last week, received 52 votes in this week’s poll to land one spot out of the rankings.

The UNLV basketball team is a 4-point betting underdog for its Saturday game at North Carolina, according to Vegasinsider.com. While North Carolina (9-3) is non-ranked and suffered an ugly 18-point loss last week at Texas, the Tar Heels (9-3) haven’t lost at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill since 2005.
