Caleb Herring finished 20-of-30 passing with five touchdowns plus another one on the ground in the final home game of his UNLV career. It was a fitting finish for the senior who's had more downs and finally ups than most players in college football.

Because of a new contract agreed to this week, UNLV coach Bobby Hauck isn’t going anywhere. But his team likely is because of the victories that helped earn him that deal. The Rebels (6-5, 4-3) host San Diego State (7-4, 6-1) on Saturday — Senior Day — at Sam Boyd Stadium for the chance to guarantee their first bowl trip since 2000. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.

I’m confident that if UNLV’s president position weren’t in flux, this story would be about UNLV announcing an extension for football coach Bobby Hauck. Even with the uncertainty around President Neal Smatresk’s likely departure to North Texas, I expect Hauck’s extension to come before next Saturday’s regular-season finale at home against San Diego State.

The Rebels don’t do easy. Their style doesn’t let you exhale until things really are over, not when it feels they really ought to be. So why should the victory securing rare bowl eligibility be any different?
