    October 30, 2011

Roy Nelson made almost everything into a joke after his UFC 137 victory over Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic Saturday night. He credited his more svelte frame to secret ninja training, claimed he shaved his beard immediately after the fight so the media would have something to talk about and cracked that he had a perfect kick percentage in the UFC.

Those concerns about the quality of competition Nick Diaz faced in Strikeforce vanished Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. In his return to the UFC after a five-year roaming period, Diaz dismantled one of the promotion's most famous former champions in B.J. Penn into possible retirement. Diaz boxed Penn to death in the two final rounds to take a unanimous decision. The judges scored it 29-28, 29-28 and 29-27.

UFC 137 weigh-in: Nick Diaz lashes out

    October 28, 2011

No matter how professional or different he appeared for the most of the week, it’s still the same ole Nick Diaz. Diaz acted out in his usual fashion after making weight at the UFC 137 weigh-in, starting a mini-scuffle with main event opponent B.J. Penn. After Penn (169) inched in for a close stare down photo, Diaz (170) rammed his head into the Hawaiian.

    October 28, 2011

Even though Georges St. Pierre pulled out of the UFC 137 main event with an injury, the promotion might as well have left his picture on the card’s poster. The welterweight champion is still the central figure of the card.

Matt Mitrione rose quickly through the UFC after stint on ‘The Ultimate Fighter’

    October 27, 2011

Matt Mitrione walked into the “The Ultimate Fighter” training center, the site of Wednesday’s UFC 137 open workouts, in slow motion. Mitrione’s steps were plodding and his head swiveled from side to side to take in views of the gym. Mitrione found it natural to reflect when placed in a venue he spent so much time in two years ago while competing on the 10th season of the UFC’s biannual reality show.

Cowboy’ is more than a nickname to UFC 137’s Donald Cerrone

    October 26, 2011

Everyone has a different definition for what constitutes as a cowboy. Donald Cerrone seems to fit every separate piece of criteria. A pessimistic view of a cowboy would be a country-lovin’ male who occupies his time fightin’, cussin’ and drinkin’. Cerrone would proudly brag about his exploits in each of those categories. A more traditional description would be someone at peace with nature who lives rurally and grazes cattle and other animals. Cerrone does all of that, too.

  • UFC 137 breakdown, betting odds and picks

    October 26, 2011

Oddsmakers think the two headlining fights at the top of Saturday's UFC 137 make the card one of the most unpredictable of the year. Both bouts — a welterweight scrap between B.J. Penn and Nick Diaz and a heavyweight showdown pitting Cheick Kongo and Matt Mitrione — hovered around a pick'em at sports books in the weeks leading up to the event. Now, Penn and Mitrione have become slight favorites.

B.J. Penn is done trying to decipher how close or far he might be from another title shot. The 32-year old UFC veteran has learned over the years that it’s too confusing to keep track and is forever fluctuating. All the two-time UFC champion knows is that he’s hungry for another belt.

Diaz appeared to skip yet another media event Wednesday afternoon, the UFC 137 pre-fight conference call, before dialing in 45 minutes late. As usual, he took no responsibility for his absence.

    October 13, 2011

The switch at the top of the upcoming UFC 137 fight card could have resulted in two more intriguing bouts than the ones originally scheduled. Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, for one, is more concerned with new opponent Carlos Condit than originally scheduled challenger Nick Diaz. “If Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz were to fight, I would put my money on Carlos Condit,” St. Pierre said. “For me, it’s an even bigger challenge.”
