Jon Jones fights his way to surprise title shot at UFC 126

    February 6, 2011

Through 13 career fights in the last three years, no one had brought Jon Jones to his knees in the octagon. UFC President Dana White and commentator Joe Rogan did the trick Saturday night at UFC 126. After Jones dispatched previously undefeated Ryan Bader in the second round via submission at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, White and Rogan had something to tell him. They informed the 23-year old that his next fight would be for the light heavyweight championship belt against Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua at UFC 128.

UFC 126 weigh-in blog: Silva and Belfort separated after going face to face

    February 4, 2011

Anderson Silva picked Friday’s UFC 126 weigh-in at the Mandalay Bay Events Center as the time and place to stop hiding his animosity toward Vitor Belfort. After both fighters made weight at 185 points for Saturday’s Main Event and middleweight title bout, Silva put on a plain white mask and put his face right into Belfort’s. The mask was an attempt to mock Belfort, who Thursday accused Silva of saying and doing “silly things” and wearing a mask to hide himself.

UFC 126 Notebook: Silent hostility exists between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort

    February 4, 2011

Although neither Anderson Silva nor Vitor Belfort will admit it, tensions between the two fighters vying for the middleweight title Saturday at UFC 126 have simmered all week. Take two examples from Wednesday’s press conference as proof. Asked if Belfort was one of the best strikers he’s ever faced, Silva offered a simple “no.” When Silva and Belfort posed for their fight picture, they got inches from each other’s faces and glared.

Anderson Silva looks to keep undefeated UFC record intact against Vitor Belfort

    February 2, 2011

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva’s last two fights haven’t produced his proudest moments. Silva, who is 12-0 in the UFC and often considered the best pound-for-pound mixed martial artist in the world, only beat Chael Sonnen last August at UFC 117 after securing a near-miracle triangle choke late. Sonnen was two minutes away from snapping Silva’s streak for most consecutive title defenses before becoming only the third fighter in UFC history to suffer a fifth-round submission.
