The excitement of making the postseason turned into nightmare for the Pahrump Valley football team in the final game of 2012. It was then second-year Pahrump coach Joe Clayton realized something. “We got the feeling like they didn’t belong there,” Clayton said of the 65-0 rout at the hands of perennial power Moapa Valley in the opening round of the Division I-A playoffs.

The Pahrump Valley High football team is going to the postseason. The Trojans’ A.J. Segura rushed and passed for a touchdown Friday in a 21-8 victory against Western to clinch a berth from the Sunset Region of the Division I-A in the playoffs as the No. 4 seed.

If Virgin Valley coach Chris Sawyers graded his team’s performance Friday night against Pahrump Valley, he’d award the defense an easy A. The offense? Well, let’s just say Sawyers would add a few more red marks. It was no matter, however, as Virgin Valley blitzed its way to a 41-8 victory and improved to 2-0 on the year.

Jared Repp deserves a good night’s rest after Friday. The Moapa Valley junior did more in a single game against Pahrump Valley than some players will do for half of the season. Repp rushed for 109 yards, recorded 12 tackles and scored a touchdown on an interception return.

There are 100 football players in the Pahrump Valley High football program. For first-year coach Joe Clayton, that means he’s already had a successful season. In the past four years, when Pahrump has managed just two victories, the Trojans’ lack of numbers forced coaches to use younger players on the varsity team just so they could field a team on Friday nights. Last year, Pahrump didn’t have a freshman team.

The Spring Valley field goal unit was unstoppable in a 16-6 win over Pahrump Valley Thursday night — even when it looked like a failure. Junior kicker Landon LeBlue knocked through three field goals — from 31, 32 and 36 yards out. On another attempt, the Grizzlies botched the snap and created a loose ball.

With no freshmen or junior varsity game this week, Desert Oasis coach Scott Staudinger decided to travel to Pahrump Valley with 76 players Friday night. All 76 of them got into the game. It was that kind of night for Desert Oasis as it pummeled Pahrump Valley, 51-14.
