On Thursday, two days before Vernon Brown’s Eldorado High football team opens the season with the Cleat Game rivalry against Chaparral, the coach was asked about playing in one of Nevada’s most storied games. He just didn’t want to look that far ahead. “It’s a big game, of course, and we want to get the cleat back,” he said. “But we are taking it one day at a time this year. I’m worried about today’s practice. It’s Thursday. Let’s worry about Saturday then.”

Chaparral High football coach Bill Froman knew winning the “Cleat Game” rivalry against Eldorado would a big deal. He just didn’t realize how emotional his players would become when they finally got their hands on the bronzed cleat NFL great Merlin Olsen donated to the rivalry in the 1970s. Chaparral’s Antonio Thomas rushed for 190 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries in leading the Cowboys to a 52-14 win.

high school football: Brothers at Eldorado follow in the footsteps of their father, grandfather
The Eldorado High School football team’s most significant game of the year is tonight when the Sundevils play at Chaparral in the annual Cleat Game. The game carries extra significance for coach Vernon Brown. His son, Justin, is a senior running back, and his youngest son, Joshua, is a sophomore quarterback.
