Chaparral High football coach Bill Froman knew winning the “Cleat Game” rivalry against Eldorado would a big deal. He just didn’t realize how emotional his players would become when they finally got their hands on the bronzed cleat NFL great Merlin Olsen donated to the rivalry in the 1970s. Chaparral’s Antonio Thomas rushed for 190 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries in leading the Cowboys to a 52-14 win.

high school football: Brothers at Eldorado follow in the footsteps of their father, grandfather
The Eldorado High School football team’s most significant game of the year is tonight when the Sundevils play at Chaparral in the annual Cleat Game. The game carries extra significance for coach Vernon Brown. His son, Justin, is a senior running back, and his youngest son, Joshua, is a sophomore quarterback.

Determined to make up for lost time, Eldorado High defensive end Mike Williams was unstoppable Friday night in the Sundevils most important game of the season. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Williams, who returned to the Eldorado lineup last week after missing the entire season with an enlarged spleen, was in the Chaparral backfield all night and sealed the Sundevils 48-21 victory in the annual “Cleat Game” with a 13-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Don’t let the final score fool you. The Del Sol High football team’s 40-6 victory Friday against visiting Eldorado was anything but leisurely. The Dragons had to overcome numerous penalties (eight in the first half alone) that halted scoring drives, their quarterback fumbled a snap on the goal line going in for a touchdown and their holder consistently struggled getting the ball down on extra points.
