Lantz Worthington is tired of hearing about it. Yes, Worthington knows his Centennial Bulldogs lost a staggering 35 seniors after last year’s best season in school history. No, the preseason All-Sun selection doesn’t foresee a drop-off in production from his young teammates who are taking over for the departed standouts.

The Centennial High football program’s debut on the national stage won’t be easy. The Bulldogs will play JSerra Catholic of Southern California on Aug. 31 in the Under Armour Brothers in Arms Classic.

This will be a chance for Las Vegas area high school football teams to make a statement. During a three-week stretch at the end of August and into early September, nine area programs will open the season against out-of-state competition in games coaches say carry much significance. Centennial rode that motivation and Newton, who had 30 carries for 115 yards, to one of the biggest victories in school history. Not only did the Bulldogs snap the Aggies' nine-game wining streak, they ended their previously undefeated rival’s season prematurely. Centennial 14, Arbor View 9.

The Bishop Gorman High football team hasn’t lost to a regular season league game since the 2006 season when it was defeated by Sierra Vista and Spring Valley. Thanks to realignment, the three-time defending state champions and nationally respected Gaels will face a new challenge this week at Centennial.

The final score in Centennial High’s 31-0 victory at Durango High on Friday night may be indicative of how much better shape the Bulldogs are in at this stage, but it certainly doesn’t reflect how much better they played. That category was much closer.
