The Basic High football team typically produces one of the highest-scoring offenses in Southern Nevada. They’ve had a first-team all-state wide receiver the past two years, averaging about 30 points per game the past two seasons. This fall, they’ll again have an explosive player leading the charge.

UNLV quarterback Nick Sherry will have another weapon in the passing game starting next fall. Devonte Boyd, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound wide receiver from Basic High in Henderson, verbally committed to the Rebels Thursday.

No one could blame Coronado senior Chris Laliberte for struggling to come up with the words to describe his team’s 24-20 victory over Basic. Before Friday night, the receiver/kicker had never caught a touchdown pass. He scored all three of the Cougars' touchdowns against the Wolves.

The Basic High football team remained undefeated in Southeast League games Thursday night with a 44-21 win against visiting Del Sol. UNLV recruiting target Devonte Boyd had nearly 200 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and returned a punt about 45 yards for another score, in helping the Wolves improve to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Southeast.

When the school bus driving the Green Valley High football team departed Basic’s Don Taylor Stadium on Friday night, you could easily hear the players celebrating their 31-27 victory in the annual Henderson Bowl rivalry game. They were signing, “Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye” at the top of their lungs in celebration of their second straight victory in the rivalry.

high school football: Basic, Green Valley continue one of Nevada's most significant rivalries at 7 p.m. Friday at Basic
Imagine winning one of the most significant games of your life and having to wait to celebrate. That’s the etiquette in the Henderson Bowl football rivalry game between Basic and Green Valley high schools. The two sides always shake hands at midfield following the game before players on the winning team race to the end zone to grab the trophy. Players on the losing team are left to watch and think what could have been.

When J’Ondray Sanders begins his morning workout session in the Basic High School weight lifting room, the senior can’t help but noticing other students in the weight training class staring in his direction.
