Early career: He formed a band, Bluesology, in 1964 with his friends and backed acts such as Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles and The Isley Brothers. He later began a collaboration with Bernie Taupin, who wrote lyrics, while he wrote the music for artists such as Lulu and Roger Cook. He began going by Elton John in honor of Bluesology saxophonist Elton Dean and English blues singer Long John Baldry.
Breakthrough: The 1970 single, "Your Song," reached No. 8 in the U.S. In 1972-73, two songs from his "Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player" — "Crocodile Rock" and "Daniel" — reached No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, on the U.S. charts.
Top Hits: No. 1 hits in the U.S. include "Bennie and the Jets," 1974; "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (for the Beatles), 1974; "Philadelphia Freedom," 1974; "Island Girl," 1975; "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," (with Kiki Dee) 1976; "That's What Friends Are For," (with Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder) 1985; "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," (with George Michael) 1991; "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" and "Candle in the Wind 1997," 1997.
Honors: In 1994, he won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe, both for Best Original Song for "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from "The Lion King." He won a Tony Award in 2000 for Best Original Score for "Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida." He won five Grammy Awards: for "That's What Friends Are For" in 1987, "Basque" (instrumental composition) 1991; "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," 1994; "Candle in the Wind," 1997; and "Elton John & Tim Rice's Aida," 2000.
Notable Inducted, with Bernie Taupin, into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992; inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994; knighted by Queen Elizabeth II Feb. 24, 1998, for charitable work; received Kennedy Center Honor in 2004.
