Las Vegas police: Man killed when car splits in two in high-speed collision

A driver was killed early today when a speeding car struck his vehicle, splitting it in two parts, according to Metro Police.

The crash happened about 3:10 a.m. at Las Vegas Boulevard North and Walnut Road, police said.

A Dodge Challenger was headed south on Las Vegas Boulevard “at a high rate of speed,” police said.

It struck the driver’s side of a Hyundai Accent that was turning from Walnut Road south onto the boulevard, police said.

The impact caused the Hyundai to separate into two parts and the Challenger to overturn and roll, police said.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 38-year-old Las Vegas man,was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said. His name was not released, pending notification of his family, police said.

A passenger in the Dodge, a 29-year-old Las Vegas man, was taken to UMC in critical condition, police said.

The driver of the Dodge, a 28-year-old Las Vegas man, was not injured, police said. He showed signs of impairment and was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on DUI and reckless driving-related counts, police said.

The collision remains under investigation, police said.
