Locals and visitors alike have been frequenting Peppermill Restaurant and Fireside Lounge on the Las Vegas Strip for decades to indulge in gigantic food portions or to sip cocktails near the fire pit in the pink-and-purple colored lounge.

The Strip staple last week was one of six recipients of the America’s Classics Award by the James Beard Foundation. James Beard awards are considered the measuring stick of achievement in the culinary world.

“What really makes it special is the welcoming atmosphere,” the foundation wrote about Peppermill in a news release announcing the awards. “It’s a place where pit bosses, dancers, bartenders and other Vegas industry folk can come after a late shift. It’s a haven, a safe place, described as somewhere no one gets bothered and where longtime waitresses will remember your name.”

Peppermill has served countless conventiongoers over the years, whether that’s to unwind with a specialty drink or for those legendary ice cream sundaes with mounds of whipped cream. It’s part of Las Vegas lore, having been featured in such films as “Casino” and “Showgirls.”

General Manager Peggy Orth started as a waitress at the restaurant in the 1970s when she was a teenager and has worked there most of her life. Her son, Nicholas, is the executive chef.

“As cornerstones of our communities, we are honored to recognize your long dedication and contribution to our industry,” said Clare Reichenbach, CEO of the James Beard Foundation in a new release.

The other recipients are: Mandalay in San Francisco, Vietnam Restaurant in Philadelphia, Pheasant Restaurant and Lounge in Brookings, S.D, Sylvia’s Restaurant in New York, and Wade’s Restaurant in Spartanburg, S.C.
