UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame seeks nominations for class of 2024

Rebel legend Dwaine Knight:

Legendary UNLV coach Dwaine Knight turned the golf program into one of the nation’s best over his 34-year tenure.

Nominations are being accepted through Feb. 13 for the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame, the university announced Tuesday.

The class of 2024 already includes one member: Golf coach Dwaine Knight, who coached the Rebels to the 1998 national championship and twice was the national coach of the year in a decorated career spanning 34 years, was announced last fall.

“When you say Hall of Fame coach, Dwaine Knight comes to mind,” athletic director Erick Harper said in announcing Knight’s enshrinement in the hall during halftime of a UNLV football game.

“His name is synonymous with collegiate golf, and he represents everything that is special about sports. We can’t wait to honor Coach Knight next year as part of what promises to be another memorable class entering the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame.”

The eligibility requirements for this year’s class include: Former student-athletes must have left the school by 2014 or prior, and coaches and staff must have left their position at the school by 2019 or prior. The hall’s selection committee waived the five-year waiting period for Knight, who retired in 2021.

Categories for consideration include: athlete, coach, staff, administration, team and distinguished contributor.

The university asks that nominations — including reasons for nominating candidates — be emailed to Mark Wallington, the committee chairman, at [email protected]. They ask to include contact information for the person being nominated.

The hall has 130 members and 17 teams. The class of 2024 will be inducted May 17 in the Strip View Pavilion at the Thomas & Mack Center on campus.
