A winter weather advisory is in effect on Mount Charleston today, with up to 7 inches of snow possible above 6,000 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

The advisory, in effect through 4 a.m. Thursday, warns of slick road conditions due to snow accumulations in Kyle and Lee canyons. The weather service said to expect snow-covered roads and limited visibility and urged caution while driving.

Go Mt. Charleston, part of a nonprofit group that supports the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, urged people to avoid the area to allow plows to clear the roads. It also noted that the Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway would be closed today.

Video posted by the group showed snow falling this morning on the mountain with a blanket of white on the ground.

The advisory covers the Spring Mountains and Red Rock Canyon, as well as the Sheep Range, north of Las Vegas.

The skies were expected to clear up on Thursday, with another chance of snow not expected until Saturday night, officials said.

Light rain, meanwhile, was forecast for today around the valley, with accumulations of a tenth of an inch or less. The skies should clear off this afternoon, officials said.

The rest of the week should be sunny or party sunny during the day, with no more rain in the forecast.
