Metro: Police car that hit scooter as escorting injured officer to hospital

A Metro Police car that hit a man on an electric scooter Thursday was helping escort an officer injured in another crash to a hospital, according to a police report.

The incident happened about 5:45 p.m. at the Grand Central Parkway and Charleston Boulevard, police said.

The police car, with its siren intermittently activated, hit the scooter, throwing the rider about 80 feet, the report said. The scooter rider was in a crosswalk, police said.

The man suffered multiple injuries, including head injuries, police said. He was taken to University Medical Center, police said.

The incident is part of an increase in pedestrian injuries and fatalities in Las Vegas since the start of the year, including over 30 pedestrian fatalities in Metro Police’s jurisdiction. A majority of those occurred while the pedestrians were crossing outside of marked crosswalks — the pedestrian struck by Metro Police was crossing in a designated crosswalk.

Metro Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill has indicated that curbing pedestrian injuries is a priority for the department, saying Monday in the annual address that “I’m tired of picking people up off the road."
