Las Vegas police: Officers shoot, kill person who refused to drop gun

A man involved in a minor traffic accident was shot and killed by officers after he pulled a gun and ignored orders to drop it, according to Metro Police.

The incident played out about 1:45 a.m. today after an officer noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in the area of Liberace Way and Sherwood Street, east of the Las Vegas Strip, police said.

The officer saw the vehicle reverse and hit an unoccupied vehicle behind it, police said. The driver got out of his vehicle to assess the damage, and as the officer tried to contact him, a foot chase ensued, police said.

During the chase, the person pointed a gun at the officer, police said.

More officers arrived and caught up with the person, still armed, in the 2000 block of Sherwood Street, police said. They ordered him to drop the gun, but he refused, prompting two officers to open fire, police said.

Medics pronounced the person dead at the scene, police said.

The incident was the first officer-involved shooting of the year, police said.
