Letter to the Editor:

Justice can’t stop for campaigning

Attorneys are familiar with the saying “the law is a jealous mistress,” which means good attorneys work long hours to properly represent clients, taking them away from their own families.

Former President Donald Trump will have to devote weeks, if not months, to sitting through his hush-money trial. His complaint about sitting through the trial, which by New York law he’s required to do so as a named defendant, was predictable, as he believes he’s above the law. It was also predictable that Trump would complain that sitting through the trial would take him off the campaign trail.

This reminds me of a saying made famous by Robert Blake in the TV series “Baretta”: “If you can’t do the time, then don’t do the crime.” This is especially true in this case as the alleged crime is an attempted cover-up of an adulterous affair with a porn star.

One last statement that comes to mind is Trump calling President Joe Biden “Sleepy Joe” and claiming that Biden was too old to be president. Trump appeared to fall asleep during the first day of his trial. At the same time, Biden continues to take on the heavy load that includes the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and Iran’s attack on Israel.

Trump made your bed and will have to lie in it. He should consider the other criminal charges against him and do the right thing to heal this nation by pleading guilty and removing himself as a presidential candidate.
