Letter to the Editor:

TikTok ban is self-destructive

Congress has attached the ban on TikTok to larger security bills and spending packages, namely the aid packages being considered for Ukraine and Israel. They have absolutely nothing to do with each other. It’s deceitful, egregious and disappointing to the 170 million people who enjoy TikTok.

China has no interest in taking down the U.S. with TikTok or any other means. Why would it want to choke the life out of the golden goose that has been laying golden eggs for it for decades? Grab the item closest to you and look on the bottom. What does it say? Made in China. Now check your appliances, television, knickknacks, fixtures and pretty much 90% of the goods in your home. It’s all made in China. If they ruin us, they kill the source of billions of funds pouring into their country.

That’s not the worst of it. Many influencers on TikTok have encouraged young people to vote, to make their voices heard. They have learned to organize and render what it takes to keep democracy alive. Now they are being deceived, not only by those who want to tear this country down but by those whom they trusted. Young people may decide it’s not worth it, go back to playing games and spend Nov. 5 telling their friends they hate politics and have no desire to vote.

TikTok is no more dangerous than any other online app. This is our government’s way to stifle free speech. There is no other explanation.
